Pitching A Game

Findings

I won’t lie and say that I was going in confident that I would have a game idea ready to be written up to pitch when I first started this project. Doomscrolling is a rather big subject to tackle with different branches to take. Considering how I decided to go a bit more in the psychological aspects to it, I was setting myself up for what could be a depressing game to pitch. Which thankfully, was not the route I end up going down after the research.

What I did run into though was a choice in how on the nose I wanted this game to be? Did I want to pitch a more serious game or something more lighthearted while still tackling the subject? In the end, I went with a more lighthearted game called iSCROLL(both on the nose and honestly made me laugh at how dumb it was). A game where you got to play out a week of working from home and trying to stay focus without social media distractions. Was definitely going more the route of those spoof games like McDonald’s Video Game but not as difficult. I had to figure out what sort of meaningful mechanics I could think of that wouldn’t overshadow the main issue that I’m wanting to address. Overall, writing the game pitch wasn’t a terrible experience! A lot of organizing and readjusting ideas to fit the aesthetic and subject issue better. Did end up having to adjust the scope a couple of times though I’m not sure if the scope fit a student timeframe. Which I still probably didn’t but hey attempts were made.

I think making the presentation took as long as creating the actual pitch document. Always been one to put equal amount effort into written and presentation. Besides there is something very relaxing about creating a presentation that made making this one very fun; be it that I was excite by the idea of the game I had or getting to use an old favourite presentation maker. I’m sorry Powerpoint but Prezi is a great love that I wish I could use more often. Something about a good dynamic presentation to showcase not only your pitch but give an insight to how the game might flow. Feels good.
